More About Edgewater, Chicago
Edgewater’s story began in the 1880s when woods in the Lake View Township were cleared to develop the area. Between 1870 and 1887, the population of the township exploded from 2,000 to 45,000. With a growing need for public services, Lake View was annexed to Chicago in 1889. It was named Edgewater by the developer John Lewis Cochran in 1885.
Within a couple of decades, Edgewater became known as one of Chicago’s most affluent communities, with mansions scattered across the lakefront and larger single-family homes being built inland to Andersonville. The affluent population grew so much that Edgewater was expanded and a new part of the community was renamed Uptown, which still exists today.
