More About Albany Park, Chicago
Settlers first arrived to Albany Park in 1893 when investors purchased land on the northwest side of Chicago to avoid the denser downtown area. One of the investors, DeLancy Louderback, was from Albany, New York, and thus the name Albany Park was born.
When developers added electric streetcars and the elevated railroad, the area boomed. By 1930, the population reached 55,000, leading to the construction of many schools, religious institutions, and parks. After World War II, many residents moved to the northern suburbs, leaving room for a new wave of Asian and Central American immigrants to settle in Albany Park.
Today, Albany Park is the most diverse neighborhood in Chicago, with 40 languages spoken in its public schools. In addition, it’s one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.
