Industrial Rooftop Deck With Chicago Views
This industrial space is an intimate-sized walkout deck connecting the master bedroom and TV room to the outdoor space showcasing expansive views of downtown Chicago.
The first step was to increase the height of the parapet walls to today’s codes and incorporate the existing privacy fence to this new railing system. We incorporated a clear panel to not block the views of the city. We placed the long cedar-clad planter with white pebble cover opposite the entry point to create an appealing interior view. This planter also mimicked the same style of the existing privacy screen so the two would look as though they were installed simultaneously. To give the long planter more presence, we installed recessed lights delineating the space during sundown when looking from inside the master bedroom.
As for the fence, we structured it with metal posts, sanded the existing cedar, and stained it to match the existing brown synthetic decking. Finally, we switched out the existing sconces for a set of modern black, copper and glass geometric sconces that matched the cylindrical sconces illuminating the freshly-stained fence.
